How Do I Help My 17 Year Old Son Addicted to Heroin? I'm Afraid He Will Die Without Immediate Help.

by E.
(Las Vegas, NV, USA)

My 17 year old son is addicted to heroin. He entered voluntarily an inpatient program last year, after an overdose but he dropped off after 2 and a half months because he thought he was ready to leave. We couldn’t force him to stay.

A few months went by and we thought he was in fact drug free and have learned from his horrible experience. About bout 8 months ago it all started again. Yesterday I found out that he is using heroin, cocaine and smoking crack. I am desperate!!!

I confronted him and he was very defensive. I cried and begged him to stop and go into a rehab program. He said that he will step out for two weeks and then go, but I'm afraid he is not stepping out and he won't make two weeks.

I would die if something happens to him. I need to do something but not sure what. I've been reading about it and some posts say that calling the police on him, having arrested in hope of a mandatory drug rehab court order won't help him. That he needs to do it voluntarily. Others say that I should do it.

Please, is there a DA or a doctor or an expert in any way, that can give me advice? Please, I am desperate! I want to help him, and I know that time is not on my or his side. What should I do?

I can’t afford any private treatment programs that claim that they can come pick him up and handle the situation. I have no financial means to pay for a rehab; it must be a public service or a private facility that would take a pro-bono case or someone that offers a grant or something like that.

Is there anyone out there that could help save my son and my family? I'm praying that this post will find an angel that can help us. My son is a good kid. He has a wonderful heart and he is so smart ... I can't believe he got to this point. I don't know how it happens.

Obviously he hasn’t made any smart choices at all, but I know in my heart that he wants to be free of drugs and back into a normal healthy life. Please help. If you are reading this and you can, or know someone that can help us, please don’t let this opportunity to save a little boy’s life pass you by. I thank you in advance for any help you can offer.

Contacting free legal aid......
by: Adina, Israel

In answer to your question, how to get him committed without an arrest, you need to ask someone at Legal Aid since you said you cannot afford an attorney or treatment.
They will at least point you in the right direction. Most countries have legal services for those who cannot afford it. The local police may even have a number for you.
You have no time to lose, so do it without delay.

Thank you.
by: E.

Thank you for you comments and support. I'm leaning towards that path. I'll speak to the police tomorrow and see about having him arrested. I guess I should also call a juvenile  court to ask about the precidure to get him committed without a arrest.... Does anyone knows how to go about it?! Again, thank you.

Commitment is the ONLY way to go........
by: Adina, Israel

I would have him committed as soon as possible. In fact, even though it is true that he has to ultimately want to get well, he is still young enough for you to make some hard choices for him. If it takes several commitments to facilities to knock some sense into him, then so be it. However, none of this will matter at all if a full psychiatric workup is not done and intensive therapy isn't utilized. No one-especially a teen-uses heroine for no reason. Your son is a very sick young man, physically and mentally. He may very well be sweet, smart and caring, but it won't mean a damn if he is not given the above help.
Hope this helps. The addicted have NO idea what hell they put their loved ones through. While addicted they are the most selfish, manipulative people one can encounter. This goes for those addicted to drugs AND alcohol!!

Court Ordered
by: Anonymous

A court ordered program is probably the way to go then because it forces your son to get help - and if he is a threat to himself at least provides temporary life. But its a short-term fix and only once your son really is ready to beat his heroin addiction will anything change long-term. I know you're desperate but there isn't a miracle fix for this. That doesn't mean you should give up hope but at some point 'let go and let God.' It's every parents worst nightmare to be in the situation you're in, but there is only so much you can do. Only once your son is ready to save himself will he ever get clean. I feel your pain and wish you the strength and courage to keep going. God Bless
