We Are All Responsible for Treating our Diseases including Alcoholism and Drug Addiction!

Yes, alcohol and drug addictions are diseases but just because you have a disease doesn't mean you aren't responsible for treating it. If someone has cancer we expect them to get help and treat their illness. We should expect the same of people suffering from addiction. Much of what stops people from getting help is the stigma associated with addiction. Nobody wants to be addicted to substances. Let's stop blaming people and start encouraging them to get help!

Unfortunately, in many cases, those who like to take alcoholism to the point of calling it a "desease" are usually the kinds of people who don't take responsibility for their actions, and decide that labeling it as such helps them avoid accepting the consequences of their own choices.

The real issue here is not whether in fact alcoholism or drug addiction fit a certain label - but whatever the label, whether it be disease, illness, condition or whatever - knowing that its the individuals responsibility to do what they can and get the necessary help to overcome it. And if the label of disease helps someone feel less stigmatised about their addiction and get help then that's a good thing. But ultimately taking responsibility is the most crucial point - until that happens nothing will change.
