Alcoholism Is Not a Disease, Period.

You have control over addictions. You do not have control over whether or not you contract cancer or pneumonia. To claim that having an addiction to alcohol is the same as having a disease is a rationalization for a victim mentality and a defeatist attitude.

People are responsible for the choices they make every day, and becoming addicted to alcohol is simply an example of failing to consume in moderation and accept the consequences of your choices. It's not surprising that those who allow themselves to become addicted to alcohol would also claim that somehow that addiction "happened" to them, and should therefore be considered a disease.

People who drink alcohol don't choose to become alcoholics. You could say they're wired differently, so unlike 'normal drinkers' who can control how much they drink and when to stop - alcoholics lose control once they start drinking and that's how they develop a problem. But why drink in the first place then you ask? Because once they've descended into alcoholism its too late already and then they simply can't survive without alcohol. And when they started drinking in the first place ... who were they to know they'd end up alcoholic? So bit of a double edged sword. There is choice, but there isn't. Choice to do something about alcoholism once the problem has become apparent - but not the choice to prevent themselves becoming alcoholic in the first place.
