What are the Percentages of Drug Addicts Who Relapse When They use Alcohol?

What are the percentages of drug addicts who relapse when they use alcohol as opposed to addicts who do not use alcohol?

Answer

To give you a definitive answer would be almost impossible - but I have no doubt that percentage would be very high. To a drug addict - alcohol is a drug. So if a drug addict starts drinking - it won't be long before they start using drugs again.

So the 'relapse' rate for those that turn to alcohol would be much higher than those who don't. But as soon as a drug addict starts drinking he/she has already effectively relapsed, but using alcohol means they're likely to start using drugs again far quicker that someone who relapses without alcohol.

Bottom line is - if you're a drug addict, alcohol is just another drug and total abstinence is the only solution.

Will Lead Back to Active Addiction
by: Anonymous

I don't know the percentage, but my son who is a recovering heroin addict refuses to go to AA or NA because of the no substance abuse policy they have. He wants to still drink alcohol because he "believes" he's only addiction was to heroin. No matter what the rehab counselors have said to him in rehab, he refuses to go to the meetings because he wants to still be able to have a drink. He has been living with us for seven months, and though he has never gotten drunk these past seven months he has relapsed two times--once with picking up Adderall and the most recent with pain medications (that were prescribed for a legitimate reason--kidney stones--but immediately abused). Did the drinking have anything to do with his relapses? I think his saying that he can use alcohol so he wouldn't be welcome in AA is just an excuse that will eventually lead him back to being in active addiction.

Alcohol is a drug...
by: Anonymous

Alcohol is a drug not only to an addict but medically it "IS" defined as a drug. Look it up. It is socially acceptable that is the only difference. Saying "addicts define alcohol is a drug" is a false statement.

oh yes

I agree absolutely. In meetings it's known as swopping the bitch for the witch.
