Iam on this page today because I'm doing what I can to find answers for my 13 yr old son,who's mom is a dr. jeckyl mr. hyde.every few months she goes M.I.A and it's really tough on him. So I read this young man's letter and first I would like to say AA/NA are great places TO CHANGE YOUR LIFE IF YOU SO DESIRE!!!.you don't just SHOW UP one day and change occurs YOU MUST BE WILLING TO TAKE DIRECTION !!. drugs / alcohol are only a symtom of an underlying problem. We addicts all our lives think we are the center of all around us and we try to influence everything we never get it right yet we continue.
we are a selfish lot sometimes to the extreme .
I personaly had to admit to myself and my god that I am powerless over my addiction and I NEED HELP .
It's true there alot of people coming to meetings that have no intention of quiting they are there only to satisfy a employer,family members,husbands
wives ect...so as in life it's amazing we can find others in these meeting who are as negative as us.when you are ready the fellowships can help you live life on lifes terms not yours thus becoming a responsible productive member of society. finally we never graduate from addiction
it is a life long work and the possibilities are endless if we work for them.

Your mother unfortunately seems so far gone that there isn't much you can do other than pray I don't think. It seems her prefrontal cortex (the rational, analytical part of the brain) may be so badly damaged so that the ability to override her impulsive, addictive behaviour has become extremely difficult to reverse. You should find a very long-term (1 year) treatment program, where she lives in an environment where her only focus in on getting clean and staying clean. Or looking at something like Narconon, which is an alternative to traditional 12 step programs.
