My 38 year old son is Drinking and Taking Drugs

He's a college graduate who was laid off from his job and is drinking and taking drugs. He wants me to help him with money, but I get the feeling it is for drugs. Don't know what to do....

Answer

Giving him money just enables his drinking/drug use. He has to take responsibility for his life and giving him money doesn't help him do that.

Using alcohol and drugs to escape because he's lost his job, doesn't help the situation at all. How's he going to get back on his feet and find a job that way?

Tough times happen to everyone, but using drugs and alcohol solves nothing. So giving him money is not a good idea.

You don't say how bad he is and whether he should get professional help - but giving up on himself is not the answer, so try and convey that message to him and see whether that helps.

And if he has developed a serious problem, you need to make it clear to him that he should get help - and support him in doing so - but then it's up to him to make the changes he needs to to turn his life around.

All the Best
